The pop-punk resurgence of the 2020s continued into 2024 as veterans of the genre relived the past, looked toward the future and bid farewell.
Green Day kicked off the year with the release of their new album, Saviors, which hearkened back to the political rock of the band’s 2000s output with lead single “The American Dream Is Killing Me.” They also planned a stadium tour in support of the record, which would also celebrate the upcoming 30th and 20th anniversaries of Green Day’s respective 1994 and 2004 albums, Dookie and American Idiot.
By “celebrate,” Green Day confirmed that they would be performing both Dookie and American Idiot in full for every night of the tour, as well as songs from Saviors and throughout their career. Even for a band known for putting on marathon shows, that seemed like a tall task to fit into one set, especially alongside a stacked bill that included The Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid and The Linda Lindas.
Still, Green Day pulled it off and rocked venues including New York City’s Citi Field, Chicago’s Wrigley Field, Boston’s Fenway Park and Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium on the way to earning the highest-grossing and highest-selling tour of the band’s career.
After returning in 2023 with ONE MORE TIME…, their first album with Tom DeLonge in over 10 years, blink-182 launched a summer tour in 2024 hitting both arenas and stadiums. They also put out a deluxe version of ONE MORE TIME… in September, featuring eight previously unreleased songs.
Sum 41 released their last-ever album in 2024, Heaven :x: Hell, and embarked on a farewell tour. The “Fat Lip” group played their final U.S. show in October and will say goodbye to the road for good after completing a tour of their native Canada in early 2025.
Along the way, Sum 41 notched two #1 hits on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart, “Landmines” and “Dopamine,” and frontman Deryck Whibley released a memoir.
Meanwhile, the annual pop-punk and emo pilgrimage, When We Were Young, returned to Las Vegas in 2024 with a lineup headlined by Fall Out Boy, as well as My Chemical Romance performing their 2006 album, The Black Parade, in full. My Chem will also be playing The Black Parade in its entirety on their 2025 stadium tour.
